Nominations open for the 2024 Barkly Regional Council election on Friday 20 September and close at 12 noon on Thursday 10 October 2024.

Steps to nominate as a candidate

There a four steps to nominate as a candidate in a local government election.

You can nominate as a local government election candidate if you are:

  • an Australian citizen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • enrolled to vote in the local government area
  • a resident within the local council area.

If you are interested in nominating as a candidate, it is important that you are aware of your responsibilities and rights throughout an election event.

To nominate as a candidate you must:

  • complete the nomination form (PDF 1.5MB).
  • be nominated by at least one other person enrolled in the local government area in which you are standing.
  • provide a recent head and shoulder photograph of yourself.

Your completed nomination form and photo may be lodged through the nomination portal

You must contact the NTEC to confirm that your nomination has been received and is correct.

Nominations can only be lodged after the notice inviting nominations is issued and before 12:00 noon on the day nominations close.

After 12:00 noon on the day nominations close, a declaration of candidates for the by-election will be held.

The NT Electoral Commission will conduct a draw to determine candidate positions on the ballot paper.

Candidates will be invited to attend the declaration of nominations.

You will be notified via email about the result of the declaration.
