2025 Groote Archipelago Regional Council General Election: Nominations now open

Candidate nominations for the Groote Archipelago Regional Council (GARC) General Election are now open.  Elections will be held to elect 7 councillors across 3 wards.

Candidate nominations will close at 12 noon on Thursday 20 February, no late nominations will be accepted.

Candidates who previously nominated are required to complete a new nomination and specify the ward they intend to contest. All prospective candidates must be enrolled in the GARC area and must nominate for one ward. The NTEC is contacting all previous candidates and providing information.

The NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly is encouraging anyone who is interested in nominating to make sure they are aware of eligibility requirements and the nomination process.  

"There are a number of resources available to potential candidates on our website, and I encourage anyone who is interested in nominating to contact the NT Electoral Commission for more information,” Kirsten Kelly said.

“I also recommend anyone thinking of nominating to be a candidate to contact Shane Marshall at the Groote Archipelago Regional Council on 8987 7701 to find out more about the role and responsibilities of a councillor.”

Remote voting for the Groote Archipelago Regional Council election will take place from Monday 3 March until Saturday 15 March. Voting centre details are available on the NTEC website.

To accommodate electors unable to vote in person, postal vote applications are now open and will close at the following times: 

*    Overseas postal vote applications – 6pm on Tuesday 11 March
*    Local postal vote applications - 6pm on Thursday 13 March

All residents in the Groote Archipelago Regional Council area should check they are correctly enrolled before the roll closes at 5pm on Tuesday 11 February. 

The NT Electoral Commission is working with the Groote Archipelago Regional Council to raise awareness and encourage voter participation in the election.
