The Redistribution Committee has released the final boundaries for the Northern Territory’s 25 divisions for the Legislative Assembly.
The NT’s electoral boundaries have been redrawn in preparation for the 2024 Territory Election in August next year. The redistribution process aimed to, as near as practicable, achieve an equal distribution of electoral across all divisions, as required by the Electoral Act 2004.
While there have been no changes to division names, 18 of the Territory’s 25 divisions have had boundary adjustments. These changes will not become effective until the 2024 Territory Election.
Maps showing the electoral boundaries can be found in Appendix A of the report, or under the Maps tab below.
The redistribution process is managed by the Redistribution Committee (the committee) which consists of the:
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 1 of 8 – Northern Territory
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 2 of 8 – Darwin, Palmerston and rural
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 3 of 8 – Darwin suburbs
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 4 of 8 – Casuarina - Wanguri
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 5 of 8 – Palmerston
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 6 of 8 – Katherine
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 7 of 8 – Alice Springs
Boundaries of electoral divisions 2023: Map 8 of 8 – Arnhem - Mulka
The object of the redistribution is that the number of electors in each division be as near to equal as practicable.
The quota of electors is the average number of electors across all 25 divisions.
The quota is to be calculated twice during the redistribution process:
Additionally, the committee may calculate the quota at any other time during the redistribution process if they are of the opinion that calculating the quota would either:
The total enrolment for the NT as at 3 February was 148,188. Therefore the first quota for the 2023 NT Electoral Boundary Redistribution is 5,928 electors.
The total enrolment for the NT as at 3 July 2023 was 152,444. Therefore the second quota for the 2023 NT Electoral Boundary Redistribution is 6,097 electors.
The total enrolment for the NT as at 15 September 2023 was 152,063. Therefore the third quota for the 2023 NT Electoral Boundary Redistribution is 6,083 electors.
The total enrolment for the NT as at 29 November 2023 was 152,063. Therefore the fourth quota for the 2023 NT Electoral Boundary Redistribution is 6,107 electors.
In addition to proposing boundaries for NT’s 25 electoral divisions, the committee can propose new names for divisions if the existing name is no longer appropriate.
The legislation specifies that the use of locality names should be avoided, although the following current divisions share their name with a locality:
As boundaries change, these names may no longer be relevant, or may become confusing, when a suburb no longer lies wholly within one division.
The names of Commonwealth electoral divisions and of living persons should also be avoided. Divisions are now often named after a person who has died and given significant service to the NT, or from a name or word that is significant to the area where the division is located.
The Redistribution Committee encourages suggestions for new names from the public, in particular for the listed divisions above, during the suggestion period.
The 2023 NT Electoral Boundary Redistribution officially commenced with the establishment of the Redistribution Committee on 22 February 2023.
