1912 - 1922
Northern Territory citizens were not listed on any electoral rolls.
1915
Voting and enrolment became compulsory in Australia however Aboriginal people were not allowed to vote.
1922
Northern Territory elected its first member to the House of Representatives, however they had no permission to speak or vote in parliament.
1962
Aboriginal people were given full voting rights in the NT
1980 - 2004
Electoral administration was carried out by the Department of the Chief Minister.
1984
Voting and enrolment became compulsory for all voters including Aboriginal people. Mobile polling began.
15 March 2004
The NT Electoral Commission was established following the Electoral Act 2004. Under the Act, the NT Electoral Commission assumed all responsibilities of the former NT Electoral Office. It was also charged with new responsibilities including promotion of electoral matters, conduct of electoral research, administration of political party registration, administration of financial disclosure by candidates, donors, political entities and political parties.
1 May 2012
Following amendments to the Local Government Act 2019 and Local Government (Electoral) Regulations 2021, the NT Electoral Commission became the service provider for the conduct of all Northern Territory local government elections.
