About enrolment

The Northern Territory electoral roll is maintained by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

A copy of the Northern Territory electoral roll is available for public inspection at the NT Electoral Commission office in Darwin.

The AEC can arrange access to the Commonwealth electoral roll.

Eligibility requirements

It's compulsory to enrol and vote in federal, Legislative Assembly and local government elections if you:

  • are an Australian citizen or eligible British subject
  • are aged 18 years or over
  • have lived at your address for at least one month

If you are aged 16 or 17, you can provisionally enrol and this means you can vote as soon as you turn 18.

Direct enrolment and update

The AEC’s Federal Direct Enrolment and Update program is used to assist some Australians meet their enrolment obligations by applying trusted third party information directly, without the need for that person to complete an enrolment application.

However, it is ultimately the responsibility of individual eligible Australians to take action to enrol or update their enrolment.
