Electoral expenditure returns - 2020 Territory Election

Electoral expenditure returns for the 2020 Territory Election for registered political parties (including their associated entities), third-party campaigners and candidates were released by the Northern Territory Electoral Commission today.

“The 2020 Territory Election expenditure returns, which cover the period 1 January to 21 September 2020, are now available on the NTEC website,” Electoral Commissioner Iain Loganathan said.

“The returns show the electoral expenditure for the above period which is required under new disclosure laws that came into force on 1 January,” he said.

An expenditure cap of $40,000 per seat was also introduced as part of political disclosure reforms for the 2020 Territory Election.

The cap was able to be pooled for political parties that contested more than one electorate.

Mr Loganathan said that accounting firm BDO Pty Ltd will now conduct a compliance review to confirm the accuracy and completeness of these returns.

"The BDO report and findings, once completed, will be available on the NTEC website," Mr Loganathan said.

Expenditure returns were due on Wednesday, 21 October and 11 independent candidates are yet to lodge their returns with the NTEC.

Also published on the NTEC website today is an amended political disclosure return for the Territory Alliance Party which was submitted with their expenditure return.
