Election night counting finished in Daly by-election

Counting in the Daly by-election has finished for the night.

Labor candidate Dheran Young with 1,905 votes leads CLP candidate Kris Civitarese in the two candidate preferred count by 399 votes.

All early, mobile, election day and returned postal votes have been counted. Votes to be added to the count over the coming two weeks are declaration votes and postal votes that are yet to be returned to the NTEC.

In total, 3,563 electors from an enrolment figure of 5,706 turned out to vote in the byelection. That number represents 62.4 per cent of the electorate.

In the 2021 Territory Election 73.5 per cent of electors voted. Electoral Commissioner Iain Loganathan said the turnout was reflective of the trend for by-elections.

“The turnout at by-elections is normally about 10 per cent down on general elections,” Mr Loganathan said.

However, Mr Loganathan said there were some noticeable differences in the trend between remote voting and voting in Darwin’s rural area.

“Compared to previous elections the turnout in remote areas for this by-election was higher, whereas the turnout was notably lower in the rural area.”

A re-check of tonight’s count will commence on Monday 13 September.

The official declaration of the result of the election will be held following the Friday 24 September deadline for the return of postal votes.

The progressive tally for the by-election can be found on the NTEC website here.
