The Northern Territory Electoral Commission has today announced that nominations for potential candidates for the 2021 Local Government Elections are now open.
There are 159 vacancies in 17 local government councils across the Northern Territory. Nominations will close at 12 noon on Thursday 5 August.
Northern Territory Electoral Commissioner Iain Loganathan said the commission would conduct 60 separate elections to determine the successful candidates.
"Local Government elections present many unique challenges for the commission," Mr Loganathan said.
"The Local Government Act has recently been amended and I encourage all people who may be thinking about nominating to make themselves aware of their obligations and eligibility to become a candidate.
"There are a number of resources available to potential candidates on the NTEC website or through their local council office or the Local Government Association of the NT."
In the 2017 Local Government Elections, a total of 320 people nominated for 157 vacancies.
Men made up the biggest number of candidates for the election with 211 nominating compared to 109 women.
Information regarding the process for nominating is available on the NTEC website here.
Voting in NT Local Government elections is compulsory.
