The NT Electoral Commission has today declared candidates for the Barkly Regional Council general election.
At 12 noon today, the names of the duly nominated candidates for the election were publicly announced, followed by a draw to determine the order of the candidates’ names on the ballot paper.
The declaration and draw took place at the NT Electoral Commission office in Darwin with attendees outside Darwin able to view online.
There is one vacancy for position of Mayor, and 12 vacancies in four wards for the position of councillor in the Barkly Regional Council general election. 21 candidates were declared.
Candidates for the Barkly Regional Council general election, in ballot paper order are as follows:
Mayor - 1 vacancy
Alpurrurulam Ward – 1 councillor position
Kuwarrangu Ward - 2 councillor positions
Patta Ward - 5 councillor positions
Alyawarr Ward – 4 councillor positions
Four nominations were received and accepted for the position of councillor for the Alyawarr Ward.
As the number of candidates nominated does not exceed the number of vacancies to be filled, the following candidates are declared elected in accordance with Regulation 10(5) of the Local Government (Electoral) Regulations 2021.
Voters in the Alyawarr Ward are still required to vote in the general election for the position of Mayor.

To accommodate electors unable to vote in person, postal vote applications are now open and will close at the following times:
Early voting is available at the Tennant Creek Civic Hall from Monday 21 October to Friday 1 November.
Early voting is also available at the NT Electoral Commission Darwin office weekdays from Monday 21 October to Friday 1 November.
Election day voting is available at the Tennant Creek Civic Hall on Saturday 2 November from 8am to 6pm.
“With the voting period fast approaching, I would like to remind Barkly Regional Council residents to plan when and where they will be voting. Electors wanting more information can contact the NT Electoral Commission office for assistance,” said NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly.
