An electoral expenditure cap is in place for:
Some expenses, such as travel and accommodation are excluded from the electoral expenditure cap.
There is no public funding for parties or candidates in Northern Territory elections.
Third party campaigners must report on political expenditure, which is defined more narrowly. Political expenditure is incurred in promoting or opposing a candidate or a registered party; it does not include communication or advertisements intended to raise awareness, educate or encourage public debate but do not promote or oppose a candidate. There is no expenditure cap for third party campaigners.
All returns are self-reported data; no party or candidate has reported exceeding the expenditure cap. The NTEC is currently following up outstanding returns.
An independent compliance review for the 2024 Territory election will commence shortly with the objective of ensuring compliance with Part 10 of the Electoral Act which relates to donations and election expenditure. The final report on will be published on the NTEC website in 2025.
