2024 Territory Election: non-voters apparent failure to vote letters sent

Voting is compulsory in all government elections in the Northern Territory. The penalty for not voting in Territory elections is $25.

The Northern Territory Electoral Commission has this week commenced sending 21,000 apparent failure to vote infringement notices to Territorians who did not vote at the 2024 Territory Election.

Recipients have 28 days to respond in one of three ways:

  1. If they voted, detail in writing where they voted for verification by the NT Electoral Commission.
  2. If they did not vote but have a valid and sufficient reason, submit in writing the reason, which will be reviewed by the NT Electoral Commission.
  3. Pay the $25 penalty.

If no action is taken by the recipient, the NT Electoral Commission may refer the matter to court, where the maximum penalty is $176.
