2026 City of Darwin Chan Ward By-election: Nominations open

Nominations are now open for the 2026 City of Darwin Chan Ward By-election as a single casual vacancy exists and a by-election is required to fill the vacancy.

There are 12,714 electors enrolled in the Chan Ward which includes the following suburbs:

  • Ludmilla
  • East Point
  • Fannie Bay
  • Nightcliff
  • Coconut Grove
  • Millner
  • Rapid Creek
  • Jingili

Nominations are open

Nominations are now open and will remain open until 12 noon on Thursday 14 May. Late nominations cannot be accepted.

To be eligible to nominate as a candidate, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • enrolled to vote in the local government area you are nominating for
  • a resident within the local government area you are nominating for.

Candidate information session

The City of Darwin are running a candidate information session for prospective candidates at the Darwin Civic Centre on Harry Chan Avenue on Monday 11 May from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.

Enrolment details

Electors for this by-election must be enrolled in the Ward at the close of roll-on Tuesday 12 May at 5pm.

Postal vote applications for the by-election are now open at applying for a postal vote.

Voting in local government council elections in the Northern Territory is compulsory.
