Candidates

A person is eligible for election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) if the person is nominated as a candidate in accordance with the requirements of the Electoral Act (NT) 2004

A person may be nominated as a party candidate of a registered party for a division by the registered officer of the party.  If the person nominating is not nominated as a party candidate, 6 electors entitled to vote at the election may nominate the candidate.

A nomination form must be completed and provided by the close of nominations date, a nomination fee of $500 applies.

Nominations for the 2024 Territory Election open on 1 August 2024 and close at 12 noon on 8 August 2024.

During an election candidates have financial disclosure obligations which are set out in Part 10 of the Electoral Act (NT) 2004, this includes gift and electoral expenditure returns in addition to the application of expenditure caps, capped expenditure periods and the requirement that all donations and expenditure be manage through a Territory Campaign Account. Routine reports including annual returns and gift returns will continue in a general election year.
