A single casual vacancy exists in the City of Darwin Chan Ward and a by-election is required to fill the vacancy.

By-elections are required to fill casual vacancies in the following local government councils:
MacDonnell Regional Council - Luritja Pintubi Ward (1 Councillor vacancy)
West Arnhem Regional Council - Kakadu Ward (1 Councillor vacancy)

The check count (fresh scrutiny) of all ballot papers counted on election night was conducted yesterday at the Darwin scrutiny centre, located in the NT Electoral Commission office. No new ballot papers were added to the count.

Counting in the Nightcliff By-election has finished for the night.

907 eligible voters in the Division of Nightcliff cast their vote today at the election day voting centre located at Nightcliff High School.

The Division of Nightcliff Election Day voting centre is now open. The voting centres is located at the Nightcliff High School gymnasium. The entry point is at 90 Aralia Street, Nightcliff.

Nominations for the Nightcliff By-election close tomorrow, Thursday 19 February 2026 at 12pm. Late nominations cannot be accepted.

The NT Electoral Commission (NTEC) has completed an internal review into the campaign donation return lodgement by candidate Peter Styles associated with the 2025 Local Government Elections.

Following the resignation of the Member for Nightcliff, a by-election for the Legislative Assembly division of Nightcliff will be conducted on Saturday 7 March 2026.

Voting is compulsory in all government elections in the Northern Territory. Voter turnout based on votes counted in the August 2025 Local Government Elections was 55.8% compared to 61.3% in the 2021 Local Government Elections. The NT Electoral roll has increased by 12,390 electors (8.7%) since the 2021 elections.
